Parent Visas (Temporary and Permanent Options)
There are various temporary and permanent Australian visa options available for parents of eligible sponsors.
Permanent parent visa options:
Eligible sponsors can be the parent’s Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, eligible New Zealand citizen child who resides in Australia, or in certain exceptional cases, another eligible relative or a community organization. The core criteria for granting a permanent parent visa include
- meeting the balance of family test,
- meeting health and character requirements, and
- arranging for an eligible Australian to lodge a refundable bond.
Some parent visas involve a two-stage process, starting with a temporary visa and then applying for a permanent visa within a specified timeframe. Processing times and visa application charges can vary depending on the chosen pathway.
Exploring Temporary Parent Visa Options:
Are you eager to bring your parents to Australia for a shorter period? We offer a variety of temporary parent visa options designed to cater to your specific needs and circumstances.
One such option is the subclass 870 Sponsored Parent visa, which grants parents the opportunity to reside in Australia for either 3 or 5 years. This pathway requires the payment of a second instalment charge of $5,000 or $10,000, depending on the desired visa duration.
Unlike permanent visa options, the balance of family test is not required for this pathway. Instead, eligible parents must meet certain core requirements:
- They must be sponsored by a “settled” Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen permanently residing in Australia.
- They must fulfill health, character, other public interest, and special return requirements.
- They should not have any outstanding public health debt in Australia and must maintain health insurance coverage from an Australian provider throughout their intended stay.
An eligible sponsor must also meet specific criteria, including preapproval by the Immigration Department, accepting liability for any outstanding public health debt incurred by the parent, meeting the government’s income test, and fulfilling other sponsorship obligations.
It’s important to note that an eligible sponsor can only sponsor a maximum of 2 parents per household at any given time. Additionally, parents can apply for multiple subclass 870 visas, allowing them to stay in Australia for a total maximum period of 10 years.
While this visa option does not grant work rights or access to Medicare, there are other cost-effective temporary visas available. These include the subclass 600 visa, allowing stays of up to 12 months, and subclasses 601 (ETA) and 651 (eVisitor) visas, enabling stays of up to 3 months.
